Choosing a Humidifer

Humidifiers come in a range of types and models with a variety of features. It is important to understand the purpose of each of these features to find the most suitable model for you.

Warm mist versus cool mist (ultrasonic)
The humidifiers we stock are separated into two types, warm and cool mist. Both have their own pros and cons based on the way in which they humidify a room.

How they work

Warm Mist
Our warm mist humidifier allows the proper amount of water to flow out of the tank and into the heating area where the Electronic Thermal Control heating element warms the water. Air is then drawn through the grill and mixed with the steam in the misting chamber. This warm mist is then dispersed out of the top of the humidifier into the room.

Cool Mist (Ultrasonic)
At the Healthy House we only stock ultrasonic humidifiers in our cool mist range. These work by vibrating a transducer at an ultrasonic frequency, much like the element in a high-frequency speaker, to create water droplets. This is then sprayed out of the humidifier as a fine, light mist.

Pros and Cons

Warm Mist
Pros

  • Gentle heating process traps impurities, bacteria and minerals, releasing only clean water vapour into the air
  • Adds warmth to the room, perfect for the colder months
  • Filter free operation
  • Can be used to disperse medicinal drops or aromatherapy oil
  • Antimicrobial plastic coating inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria, mould and mildew

Cons

  • Contains a heating element so care should be taken to place the unit out of reach of curious toddlers and young children
  • Slower than a ultrasonic humidifier in generating a mist
  • Higher energy cost than an ultrasonic humidifier

Cool Mist (Ultrasonic)
Pros

  • Energy efficient
  • Low energy cost
  • Very quiet
  • Filter free operation
  • Has no heating element so considered safer for curious toddlers and young children
  • Antimicrobial plastic coating inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria, mould and mildew

Cons

  • Does not filter the water;  the purity of the mist is dependant on the purity of the water you put in the humidifier
