Longing for spring and summer but can't go out when it comes?
If you suffer from hay fever you are amongst a growing number of people in this country who do and it can start as early as March and continue into the autumn. The severity of hay fever ranges from mild symptoms to quite debilitating symptoms with streaming and itchy eyes and a streaming nose. The symptoms can often be worse in the morning. You may even find that your pet that you tolerate perfectly well during the other months of the year also causes you problems during the hay fever season. Hay fever is almost synonymous with allergic rhinitis having symptoms in common though it can also be the result of dust mite allergy.
If your parents and siblings suffer from hay fever you may feel that it is normal that you should also suffer and that there is nothing you can do about it. It is certainly more difficult to control the symptoms outside but you can make a haven for yourself indoors where you can be free of symptoms.
It is a shame to dread the summer and the hay fever season. It causes frustration, embarrassment and can even cause you to feel isolated when you cannot go out with friends. Remember that the triggers for hay fever vary according to where you live and the time of year and that there may be a cross reaction with certain foods making your hay fever worse. Case Study: Lynsey's Experience of Hay Fever
Hay fever
Hay fever is becoming more and more common and a large number of the population suffer from it. This is a direct allergy to pollen, either from grass, flowers or trees. It is normally restricted to the spring, summer and autumn months when the grass is in seed and the flowers, trees and weeds are in full germination mode.
What causes hay fever?
Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen. Severity of symptoms is directly related to the amount of pollen in the air and the amount of pollen that the sufferer is exposed to. This can vary depending on Pollen count, heat, and time of day. One thing to bear in mind is the pollen shower. This explains why people often find that their symptoms increase at night. Do you ever wake up in the middle of the night with an attack of hay fever or pollen asthma? And do you ever wonder why this should happen? The explanation is that warm air, rising up from ground level on a summer's day, takes pollen with it high into the Earth's atmosphere. When the air cools down after sunset, this pollen slowly descends again, creating an invisible pollen shower.

Who gets hay fever?
Almost anyone can get hay fever. People can develop it in childhood or adulthood. Some people react only to one type of pollen and others react to many different types of pollens. Like with any allergy symptoms also vary in their severity from mild sneezing to much more debilitating symptoms that affect people so much that life becomes very difficult during the summer months.
