DermaSilk Adult Gloves

These gloves have an elasticated welt ensuring they fit snugly. They can help reduce itching and scratching and are also useful in the prevention of contact eczema. This can be aggravated by external irritants commonly found in the home or in the catering, cleaning, engineering or healthcare industries. The gloves are designed to be worn on their own or underneath work gloves. DermaSilk is made of a special knitted medical grade silk which has been stripped of its outer coating and bonded with Microbe Shield technology*. "Normal" silk fabrics used for clothes are not recommended for dressing of subjects with atopic dermatitis, as these fabrics reduce transpiration and therefore may cause worsening of disease activity. These gloves are 54% silk and 46% Coolmax.

Coolmax is a fabric made from 100% spun polyester which is used in many athletic garments and is designed to wick moisture away from the skin. The early versions of DermaSilk gloves were made from 100% DermaSilk but they did not last very long under everyday conditions. Coolmax was added as an outer layer on the gloves to improve their structural robustness. No Coolmax touches the skin as the knit keeps it on the outside so that the wearer only comes into direct contact with the DermaSilk. 

*DermaSilk is specially bonded with an antimicrobial shield, called AEM 5772.5, which has been used in hospitals for over thirty years and has proven ability to inhibit bacterial and fungal growth on fabrics such as operating theatre gowns. It acts by puncturing and electrocuting bacteria and fungi, causing their death. There is no chemical poisoning of the cells and no chemicals or nano-particles are released onto the skin. No other antimicrobial is capable of protecting silk in this way.

Washing DermaSilk
To maximise the life of your DermaSilk gloves wash carefully by hand with non-biological (enzyme free) detergent suitable for sensitive skin. Rinse thoroughly and air dry.

Every ten washes we recommend soaking DermaSilk overnight in a solution of two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda per litre of water to maintain the softness of the fabric, then wash as above.
