Why we focus on untreated bedding
When choosing bed linen the words “wrinkle free”, “non iron” or “easy care” should sound a warning bell as this means many of these duvet covers, pillows cases or sheets may have been been treated with formaldehyde.
Although usually associated with preserving corpses, formaldehyde has alarmingly been adopted by many big clothing chains to give their wares a fresh unwrinkled appearance and prevent mildew during shipping.
The labels to watch out for include: easy care, permanent press, anti-cling, anti-static, anti-wrinkle, stain resistant, moth-proof, mildew-resistant, colour-fast.
Formaldehyde, a highly toxic, colourless gas, has been linked to skin irritation and allergic reactions. Even more worryingly, the chemical is classified as a human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Sleeping between the sheets of a fabric treated with formaldehyde could also cause insomnia, coughing, watery eyes, fatigue upon awakening, and sore throats in some people.
Formaldehyde is not the only chemical used today as flame retardants could also be used in bedding along with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and dioxin-producing bleach which is also used in the textile industry.
This is why The Healthy House focuses on untreated bedding
Our exclusive Healthy House brand of dust mite proof barrier cases for duvets, pillows and mattresses are made with 100% unbleached cotton or untreated polyester offering protection for anyone who is chemically sensitive or suffers from a dust mite allergy.
If you suffer from MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity) or skin allergies, switching to organic bedding may help relieve your symptoms and give you peace of mind.
At The Healthy House we take great care in choosing products from our suppliers. With a wealth of experience with allergies - knowledge gained both from personal experience and through years of helping our customers - we painstakingly research every product we stock to minimise the risk of customers reacting to ingredients or chemicals within it.
The collection of organic bedding, which includes the brands I AM Organic, all carry organic certification from The Soil Association and Global Organic Textile Standard and is only made from the purest materials.
Our luxury line includes Pure Alpaca duvets and pillows which not only combine organic casing but due to the natural wool filling are body responsive making it an ideal choice for summer and winter.
Many people think they are allergic to feather or down duvets but could be reacting to the bacteria and dust mites in the down. All our Downafresh certified pillows and duvets mean the raw feathers have been cleaned and dried at a temperature of 100°C eliminating the bacteria.
