We chose not to have a remote monitor in the kitchen...

Garage with photovoltaic panels

In June we had 15 photo voltaic solar panels installed on the roof of our garage. Don had undesrstood that the panels collect the power in direct current and then change it to alternating current at the inverter. When using the meters, we found that there are no magnetic fields coming from either the panels or the invertor. However, there is a high electrical field coming from both the invertor and the panels themselves and these were measured inside the building with the roof between the the panels and the inside of the building. The safe electrical level is 20. Close to the roof the level measures 700 and it goes down to 38 at about a meter from the roof.  We will be insulating the roof and covering it and will also shield it so that we can work safely in the garage.

The inverter has high electrical and magnetic fields because of the alternating current. Again there were no microwave fields. We were offered a remote monitor, which they wanted to install in the kitchen, which we declined since it would have been giving off microwave radiation and the unit that was installed in the garage is wired in rather than Wi-Fi.

Green versus healthy?

Measuring the invertor

People tend to imagine that "green" equates to "healthy" and would that this were always the case. We're pleased with the panels and that we are creating our own electricity but also thankful that we have the meters and monitors to see what we need to do to make the space safe. The garage is unfinished at present in any case so having this information before the renovation has been very useful. Once we have installed insulation etc. we will remeasure the fields and post the results.

If you have photovoltaic panels on your home or office building, it might be an idea to measure the fields and see where the safe or not so safe levels are.
