Almost everyone uses a mobile phone regularly, but are they safe?
While there is no conclusive evidence to confirm that they are unsafe, a growing body of research suggests that there may be potential ill-effects on human health as a result of exposure to the type of radiation that mobile phones emit. The IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), part of the World Health Organisation, has actually classified radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (EMFs) as a ‘possible carcinogen’ (cancer causing agent).
If you have a condition called electrical sensitivity, you may experience immediate symptoms as a result of being exposed to electromagnetic fields. You can read more about this condition here.
Whether you’re electrically sensitive or not, we believe that everyone should be taking precautions when it comes to mobile phone usage (and in fact, all other devices that emit EMFs). Here are a few simple tips...
1. Text rather than call
Radiation exposure decreases the further away you get from the source. When you’re texting, your phone is further away from your head than it is when you’re making a call. Therefore, it may be helpful to save your minutes for important conversations or those where you need an immediate response.
2. Use a hands free headset
Using a specialised ‘hands free’ headset is a great way to reduce the amount of radiation reaching your head. We particularly like the Air Tube Headset, which converts signal into harmless airwaves. It reduces the amount of radiation reaching your head by over 99%.
3. Protect yourself with a case
Many of us keep our phones in our trouser or shirt pockets. This is convenient, but it also means that your phone is directly against your body, and therefore the radiation may be more likely to be absorbed by your soft tissue. You can purchase specially-designed mobile phone cases that shield the radiation from your head or body. You can view a selection here, including the brand new WaveWall Flip.
4. Monitor children’s phone usage
Children’s skulls are less well protected from radiation than adult skulls are. Their bones and nervous systems are still developing, and the soft tissue in their brains is more absorbent. Studies suggest that children’s bone marrow absorbs 10 times more microwave radiation than adult bone marrow. Therefore, keep a close eye on how much your children use a mobile phone and other EMF-emitting devices. Make sure only essential calls are made and consider limiting the time they spend using this technology.
5. Consider harmonising devices
There are lots of products available on the market which claim to ‘harmonise’ or ‘retune’ EMFs. Designed to act like a tuning fork, these products aim to translate the EMFs into a frequency that is more tolerable to humans.
These products come in the form of adhesive foils or stickers, which can be attached to things like laptops, mobile phones and sat nav systems. Many of our customers swear by them and we have received a great deal of positive feedback from them. You can view our selection of harmonising devices here.
