Night sweats, known as the nocturnal cousin of hot flashes, are one of the most common symptoms of the menopause and are said to affect around 75% of women.

What causes night sweats?

Hormone imbalance during the menopause, which affects most women between the ages of 45-55, tends to be the main trigger.

Doctors believe the sudden rise in temperature is a result of fluctuating or decreasing oestrogen levels. When a woman’s menstrual cycles stop, oestrogen levels within the body falls dramatically.

This fall impacts on the hypothalamus in the brain, which is responsible for the regulation of body temperature.

Once this thermostat changes many women start to suffer from night sweats, medically referred to as sleep hyperhidrosis, which can be so intense they interrupt sleep.

Doctors believe the drop in oestrogen confuses the hypothalamus into making it think that the body is overheating.

This brings about all the usual responses the body would normally use to keep cool - the skin reddens, causing the hot flushes, and the sweat glands begin to work.

The night sweats can also be accompanied with other symptoms including skin sensitivity, irregular heartbeat, nausea and headache.

How to enjoy a cool night’s sleep

If you have started to suffer from night sweats or are simply seeking a cooler sleep, the first step is to focus on your bedding.

We provide a selection of breathable bedding and linens which have been carefully selected to help regulate your body temperature to help you achieve a peaceful night’s sleep.

Other factors to consider include:

  • Wearing light, cotton clothing to bed
  • Keeping your bedroom cool
  • Taking a cool shower before bed
  • Avoid potential triggers such as spicy food, caffeine, smoking and alcohol

An ideal body temperature regulator is the DermaTherapy® Dermatological Duvet Cover which redirects moisture from the skin to help keep you cool and comfortable.

Irritated, sensitive skin can also be one of the symptoms of the menopause.

Unlike regular cotton or polycotton fabrics that have many tiny fibres that can be abrasive to delicate skin, the DermaTherapy® range has been specifically created to be smooth and low-friction.

The very smooth surface has been designed to keep skin irritation to a minimum. The silk-like surface channels moisture away from the body allowing maximum comfort. VAT exemption is available (simply self-certify at the checkout with one click).

If you are heading off on holiday or away on business you can still enjoy a comfortable night’s sleep with the DermaTherapy® Sleepsac. Not only is it breathable, it is also dust-mite proof and washable at high temperatures to remove allergens.

If you prefer completely natural fibres, why not consider organic wool? This ‘miraculous’ natural fibre keeps your temperature stable in bed, insulating as well as cooling.

I AM Organic Wool Light Duvet is filled with 100% organic Welsh wool harnessing the natural qualities of the “world’s most breathable fibre”. Wool fibre can absorb up to 30% of their own weight in moisture before it begins to feel ‘damp’.  This helps you to feel fresh and cool at night.

You can also select other products from our range of temperature regulating bedding to help you enjoy an undisturbed night’s sleep.
