Bed Bugs

How to get rid of them without using toxic insecticides

Until recently bed bugs were not something we, in the U.K., were particularly concerned about. The outbreak of bed bugs last year changed all that and now they are an ever increasing problem.

One of the problems is that they tend to go with you. So, if you have picked up a bed bug up abroad, in a hotel or in someone else’s house the chances are that very soon you too will have an infestation of them in your home.

Unlike dust mites that are microscopic and unseen by the human eye, bed bugs can be seen by the human eye even though they are very small. Also unlike dust mites, bed bugs bite.

Some people will react to the bites with an allergic type reaction whilst other members of the same family will show no signs at all even if they have been bitten.

Bed bugs hide in furniture, the crevices beside the piping in mattresses, in clothes and bedding. They tend to scurry away but with thorough cleaning and care you can get rid of them naturally.

HomeCare Range for getting rid of Bed Bugs and Dust Mites

The HomeCare range of sprays and laundry liquid is ideal to use for this purpose.

HomeCleanse is a spray that can be used on furniture and furnishings to kill the bed bug.  The FabriCleanse is a concentrated solution that can be used in the washing machine for killing dust mites and bed bugs and for denaturing other allergens. The FabriCleanse contains benzyl benzoate, eucalyptus and Peruvian balsam to kill the bed bugs and dust mites. Benzyl benzoate is the fast acting ingredient which is washed out in the rinse cycle whilst the eucalyptus and Peruvian balsam are longer acting and the smell remains faintly in the fabric. Bed bugs do not like the smell of eucalyptus or Peruvian  balsam so if you wash all your bedding in FabriCleanse they will be much less likely to find refuge there. Eucalyptus and Peruvian balsam are both powerful acaricides (bug killers) and allergen neutralisers.

AirCleanse is a spray that you spray into the air to denature allergens. We recommend that this be used to clear the air. It also contains eucalyptus and Peruvian balsam, which the bugs do not like.

If you have carpet in your room we recommend using a dilution of FabriCleanse and water in a carpet cleaner to thoroughly clean the carpet. This is very concentrated so you will only need to use 1 ml of FabriCleanse to 1 litre of water.

Use the HomeCleanse on fabrics and soft furnishings. This is a less concentrated solution  than the FabriCleanse and will kill bed bugs and dust mites on curtains, mattresses and upholstered furniture.

We recommend using these treatments once a week for the first two weeks and then once a month. This will keep your room both bed bug and dust mite free. It will also denature any other airborne allergens that might affect you.

Dust Mite Proof Barrier Cases

Though the use of dust mite cases for bed bugs is quite different to using them as a barrier to dust mites, they still have a very useful purpose.

Bed bugs like to hide in the folds of bedding, duvets, pillows, and bed linen,  and around the piping and buttons on mattresses. First thoroughly clean the mattress and treat with HomeCleanse. Wash the barrier cases, all bedding and bed linen in FabriCleanse. (Because the essential oils do smell and some people are sensitive even to essential oils, we recommend hand washing a small garment or pillowcase using the FabriCleanse before washing all your bedding in the washing machine.)

Once dry, encase the cleaned mattress in a dust mite proof mattress case and the pillow and duvet in the pillow case and duvet case. Because the treatment will have already killed the bed bugs, by encasing the bedding this will prevent further infestation in the mattress, pillows and duvet. If you have done a thorough job of ridding the room of bed bugs there is no reason why it should become reinfested. If it does, you will need to rewash the cases and your bed linen.
